Practicing the Presence of God
![]() |
Brother Lawrence walked "before God simply, in faith, with humility and with love," applying himself "diligently to do nothing and think nothing" which might displease his Lord. His one desire was for God to form His perfect image in his soul.
This was not a passive resignation to the divine will, but rather an active perseverance in the Presence of God, wherein he kept himself by constant attention. Nearly three centuries have passed since Brother Lawrence's writings first appeared, but they have lost neither their freshness nor their practical wisdom. Spiritual pilgrims still sit at the feet of this natural teacher who "all his life studied to avoid the gaze of men." |
